I was very impressed by Alice Winocour‘s Proxima, and although it was hit by the 2020 effect, it’s nevertheless a film that’s remained in my mind, with a stellar performance from Eva Green – take a look at my 4-star review here if you’re intrigued.

Today, we take a first look at Winocour’s Paris Memories and, keeping the character-centred trait in mind, I’m happy to share the new trailer from Picturehouse Entertainment for what is surely set to be a poignant journey when it comes to UK cinemas on 4 August.

Starring Virginie Efira and Benoît Magimel, the film follows Mia (Efira), who is struggling to make sense of what happened during the aftermath of a violent attack. The sense of fractured memories led her to meet up with others who were also there, including Magimel’s Thomas, but what did happen – and can she rebuild her own life and reconnect with the city she loves? The story itself is inspired by the November 2015 attacks in Paris and her experiences, alongside her brother – she had this to say:

My brother was at the Bataclan on November 13th.  While he was hiding, I stayed in contact with him by text for part of the night. The film was inspired by my own memories of the trauma and by the account my brother gave in the days after the attack. I experienced for myself how events are deconstructed, and often reconstructed, by memory.”

With cinematography from Stéphane Fontaine (A Prophet, Rust and Bone, Jackie), watch the trailer for Paris Memories now:
