Directed by George C. Wolfe, with a screenplay from Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, now here’s another real-life story of a real-life person that most of us probably don’t know, and I’m on board to discover more about Rustin, because it’s indefinitely, and importantly, part of the vital modern civil rights history.

The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin (played here by Colman Domingo) was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.

Directed by DGA Award and five-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, Rustin promises to shine a long overdue spotlight on the extraordinary man who, alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, dared to imagine a different world, and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom.

Here’s the excellent teaser trailer:

Alongside Domingo, the film also stars Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, CCH Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Lilli Kay, Jordan-Amanda Hall, Jakeem Powell, Grantham Coleman, Jamilah Rosemond, Jules Latimer, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, Frank Harts, Kevin Mambo, Carra Patterson, Bill Irwin, Cotter Smith, Adrienne Warren, with Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald.

Rustin comes to select cinemas on 3 November, and onto Netflix from 17 November

  1. Will definitely be watching this one. If you like this kind of documentary, I recommend this one:
“The Blinding of Isaac Woodard” (2021) American Experience TV series S33 E3. Thurgood Marshall was one badass and it shows how and why in it.

    1. Thanks! So many stories arriving these days, crazy to think how so much was basically hidden – goes back to the old ‘who writes the history’ line though
