In a world of being able to watch your favourite films anywhere, as well as picking out those legendary music tracks working from home, connecting to your car, on the train or out for a run, the world of true wireless earphones is more important – and competitive – than ever.

Founded in New York in 2014, Status Audio is the invention of James Bertuzzi who gets involved at the ground-level with product developing and manufacturing, and they add that sound quality – above all – holds the highest importance in the creation of new in-ear and over-ear products.

I’ve tested out quite the selection of both styles in recent years, and today we’ve got a smart set of high-quality earphones with Status Audio’s Between 3ANC, available in the colours of Onyx or Bone. These are triple driver active noise cancelling wireless earbuds, and as well as hosting a series of positive advantages, the key with earbuds for me is the absolute ‘must have’ = the ANC. Already subtly mentioned once in this paragraph, that’s the Active Noise Cancelling option which means you get a significant reduction of the sound from the outside world invading the sound attempting to get into your ears.

Activated via a literal touch on one of your earphones, this benefit is vital and plays a large role in deciding whether any type of earphone is worth investing in these days, and that’s covering working at home, in the office or on your way to your workplace wherever that be! If you have the type of role where you need that ‘focus time’ – or even enjoy disappearing into the world of thought when doing something creative or practical – and want it to be accompanied by music, film scores, podcasts or whatever you can stream into your mind and help balance out that plan.

Where can I use them?

For the purpose of testing, I’ve taken them to various locations over the past few weeks, including at home, on the train and in the general hustle and bustle of the city. That includes working space with outside building work, continual delivery vans reversing in and out throughout the day, plus the general noise of colleagues and neighbours – and you can apply that to strangers in public places to. Whether your home setup is a flat or your own house, you’ll appreciate there’s always something to distract you – unless you’re lucky enough to be living in the distant silence of the countryside.

Do they have a comfortable fitting?

I’ll be honest and say most of my true wireless earbuds have a more rounded edge to the design, whereas the Status Audio Between 3ANC chooses a stockier, rectangle-shaped, and shorter fit but I appreciated the different kind of style, and for me it was a compact fit into ear. Now, the only difficult thing with earbuds is how they fit you individually, but you do get a few different earbud wraps as well, to hopefully find one that works for you.

How do they work – and how effective is the touch control?

These earbuds utilize both the metal-like touch surface on the top-half of the bud a small button, rather than just one or the other, I found the touch element worked reasonably well in terms of responsiveness, but I did have some issues with the small buttons that should help you to turn the ANC or the Ambient Sound Mode on and off. The small buttons do click but it’s difficult to judge the time element for them to switch between just changing the mode, and turning one of them off – in truth I love the idea but maybe there’s too many options in such a small space – although thankfully you can also turn these options on and off via the app as well – which is very easy to download and implement.

Is the App any good?

The app itself is simple, and that’s fine by me – in a phone dominated by apps for every single thing in the world, I don’t need another globe-trotting confusion with multiple logins. With the Status Audio 3ANC App, you download it, you add the device, and you can switch the ANC and Ambient Noise options on/off, which is incredibly helpful if you’d had complications with the buttons.

It gives you options to change the basic equalizers for your earbuds as well, it appears to default on Status’ Signature sound – which is acceptable – and then you’ve got the Audiophile EQ and the Original Between Pro EQ, with the latter being my favourite over time. I need a bit more bass in my ears, and while you could also adjust your own equalizer, that first and third ones balanced out what I personally required.

Connecting to Devices, easy enough?

Absolutely straightforward in this respect. You’ll know the Bluetooth chaos of making sure a new device is actively ‘visible’, and in this setup the charging case and earbuds took merely seconds to find and ‘Pair’ without an issue.

As well connecting to my Android phone, I picked up the Fire TV Tablet easy enough – when the main TV is wanted by others or when you’re between places, or retreating to wherever you wish – and with the wealth of tables or phones that don’t implement a headphone socket anymore, then you need this option to get your films, shows, podcasts or music to you – as and when you need it!

Technical details and Phone Call quality

If you’d like technical details, here’s some deeper info but not too deep, I want this to be understandable for everyone, including myself!

The Status Audio Between 3ANC uses a triple driver for their speakers [drivers = speakers], which might be why they’re slightly squarer than the likes of your average Apple Airpods – for example. If you’ve got the Airpods, then you’re only getting a single driver in your ear but with the Between 3ANC, the ‘3’ is purposeful as this gives you a triple driver performance, which breaks down to a 10mm Dynamic Driver and 2x Balanced Armature Driver – and yes, in both earbuds.

There’s no reason to not mention the hybrid active noise cancellation again, up to 38 decibels, plus the transparency mode (which means you hear your surroundings better), and Bluetooth 5.2 which as mentioned means connectivity shouldn’t be an issue.

The Status Audio charging case has a pleasing weightiness feel to it, as with anything new – charge those buds properly the first time you use it. Most products come with some energy but it’s worth fully charging to get the battery used to that type of life. The case itself has a USB-C port, that links in with the USB-A to USB-C included cable [i.e., a wire like your phone charger one]. There is also Wireless Charging if you’ve got a pad, whereas you put the whole loaded case on the pad – but make sure it’s centred.

While I didn’t have any problems with the earbuds charging back to 100, do make sure they’re slotted in the right way around. For me, it’s pretty obvious when they are but I can see people not quite letting them slot into place. With the charge, you’ll get a fancy 8 hours of continuous audio playback with ANC on, and 12 hours of playback with ANC off, both of these perfect for use over a week or more – or just a day in the chair of charts of admin or creative constructiveness.

Finally, phone calls were notable with a bass-deep sound on the voice and no obvious issues with background noise or connectivity, the earbuds have 6x external microphones and felt that they picked up both what I was saying, and who I was listening to, in a slightly more impressive way than a normal phone call.

Summary

True Wireless Stereo (TWS) has come a long way in a short time, and the Status Audio Between 3ANC gave me almost everything for what I’d expect from a product within this price bracket. I do think they’re an investment, and although these felt somewhat bulkier in a ‘less breakable’ sense, if that’s what you need then I can’t see an issue here – especially as they’re cheaper than overpriced Airpods and you’re getting a much better-rounded product.

Overall, good sound and a really useful ANC option that has to be right for anything I need, and it covered those bases. Add in the triple driver to make sure the sound hitting your ears as crisp and clean as you’d demand, and you’re onto a winner alongside the reliable connection and that particularly impressive long battery life.
