This isn’t a case I’d heard about before, but the trailer for the new American Nightmare documentary – coming to Netflix on 17 January – suggests a story similar to the fictional Gone Girl, a novel by Gillian Flynn and subsequent movie starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, but is the truth stranger (or just true)?

The trailer sets up that type of approach but it’s actually the tale of Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn, who were awoken by a home invader, and Huskins was kidnapped. Filmmakers Felicity Morris and Bernadette Higgins are behind this 3-part doc, and it’s safe to say that true crime stories remain lingering in intriguing human possibilities, even if stranger than fiction.
