So this feels like it deserves the big screen release it’s got coming. Monkey Man is Dev Patel‘s feature directorial debut, based on his own story, with the screenplay by Patel, Paul Angunawela and John Collee – and it’s a brutally exciting prospect on the way!

Monkey Man follows a young man who’s just making ends meet, and lives in an underground fight club and night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, is beaten down by fighters for cash. Building up years of suppressed anger, he works out how to finally infiltrate the dark side of the city and – coupled with trauma – begins to unleash retribution to those who took it all from him….
Bit of a warning regarding the trailer, once you start watching you’ll realise it’s a very long one, so if you don’t want to watch the film play out – maybe just watch a couple of minutes. I enjoyed this prospect for Monkey Man though, and it feels like a great escape for the big screen – thanks to Jordan Peele, who picked it up after it was originally planned purely for Netflix.
Here we go:
The film also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte and Makarand Deshpande, with fight choreography from Brahim Chab, a highly skilled talent who has previously worked with the likes of Jackie Chan.
