I always been an Alien adorer, Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 film still stands out as a masterpiece of silence and horror, of the unknown alongside cinematic excellence out of small beginnings… including that tremendous cinematography from Derek Vanlint.

While we unfortunately never got to see Neill Blomkamp‘s take on the xenomorph (see some concept art here), we did get Prometheus before that project (which I’ve always enjoyed) and then 2017’s Alien: Covenant, which was decent but felt like a greatest hits of the genre – perfectly affable in its existence.

So, it’s with great pleasure and absolutely huge hope from this terrifying trailer that Fede Álvarez‘s Alien: Romulus will step us aboard a derelict space station (giving me vibes of Alien: Isolation) and could certainly take us back to that intense horror beginning. It’s also set between Alien and Aliens and follows a team of space colonisers… dipping beneath a mist that they just shouldn’t have.

Álvarez directs Alien: Romulus, and co-wrote with regular collaborator Rodo Sayagues, based on those characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, with Ridley Scott is onboard as producer and reportedly James Cameron lingering behind the chains, with the spirit of Jonesy watching, as an off-the-record consultant.

Facehuggers on the loose, screaming into the long shadowy echoes of an empty space station tunnel and all the right elements of that horror original, have a watch of the first teaser – and those pics above – for Alien: Romulus now:

Alien: Romulus comes to cinemas from 16 August
