While I enjoyed Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, in a way that can only be described as curiously and intensely impressed, I haven’t revisited it as yet – although this trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux certainly made me want to.
I’ve always been a fan of the Batman and Joker, and love the progressive darkness of the relationship, and particularly Joker’s inception through the likes of The Killing Joke, and even a little bit of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, which might have scarred me for life as a kid. There’s must be a mention for Christopher Nolan‘s impact with Heath Ledger fully immersing in a filmic sense, and not forgetting Tim Burton‘s vision with Jack Nicholson either.

In Joker: Folie à Deux, we return to the life of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) who in Arkham Asylum meets Harley Quinn (a perfect-looking Lady Gaga for this role), originally a psychologist he corrupts and charms but this time around… maybe an inmate? I’m sure it’ll unravel in their uniquely crazy love story. And I’m hopeful with the key partnership at the center because they’re two killer talents, taking on complex characters.
Is this a musical… nope, but music plays a huge part, or have they just let the marketing happen organically (sounds like a bastardization of those latter terms), and it feels like they tease and reveal in this quite epic trailer. The film also co-stars Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and more.
Let me know what you think, here’s that trailer:
