Well, this is a visionary treat, and feels like quite the journey just from the trailer stylistics and intriguing setup for Alma Har’el’s Lady in the Lake.

Coming to Apple TV+, and based on the 2019 novel by Laura Lippman, this upcoming, 7-part limited series stars Natalie Portman, who also serves as exec producer, and Moses Ingram. It makes it global streaming debut on 19 July, with new episodes every Friday all the way through to 23 August.

Created and directed by Har’el, Lady in the Lake follows the story of a young girl who disappears in Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, and from it the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Here’s some official synopsis, and then watch the trailer:

Maddie Schwartz (Portman), a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Ingram), a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger.

Described as a ‘feverish noir thriller, the series also stars Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince.

Lady in the Lake comes to Apple TV+ from 19 July
