The 1921 HMV Editions have been spinning around the special edition world for a while now, and very recently Demon Records also got involved to add their incredible back catalogue into the fold, with Suede, Space and The Bluetones recently getting involved for the rather successful HMV Vinyl Week.

Beautiful Ones The Best of Suede

With some bands there’s such a affluent back catalogue that it can be difficult to know where to begin, and Suede certainly fall within that bracket, having over 30 years of songs to dive into. While Demon Records did release the masterful 6LP set a few years ago, this new version is nicely moulded down to 2LPs and you’re most definitely still getting a selection of the finest hits all the back to The Drowners, to Animal Nitrate, then onto The Wild Ones, Trash, Obsessions, right up to Life is Golden, amongst others.

This double vinyl arrives as a tasty 140g translucent red duo, and I’m really glad they’ve kept the inner selves that graced the bigger boxset for Beautiful Ones The Best of Suede, because it features fans’ memorabilia from over the decades, and adds an excellent personal touch. With a total of 21 tracks to indulge in, this setup is most definitely one of the better ones – and worth your time if you’re new to the band, or even just want to see that change and progression over the years.

The Bluetones: The Singles

Next up is those cheeky, yet suave, The Bluetones who – much like Suede – have never really stopped working and touring, although with a lot of focus on past material, it’s excellent news that a new album is on the way, and the touring is possibly accompanying a whole era of the ‘Tones. If you’re also new to the band, then this is a great collection and, er, get in touch if you need any more tips – they’ve been ‘my band’ since they first emerged to be honest.

The Bluetones: The Singles comes as 2 LPs with a plethora of fine hits right across the vinyl, it’s a clear 140g translucent offering with 16 tracks that take any new or old listeners right through their music career to date, with tracks such Bluetonic, Marblehead Johnson, If…, Mudslide and After Hours – forever championing not only the finest indie sounds, but with that connection to all things good like Edgar Wright and the gang there, which is definitely fine by me. I’ll always recommend these lads, both on record or live, they know their stuff and have a unique ear for a song both musically and lyrically.

Avenging Angels – The Best of Space

And topping off the trio, so to speak, is those quirky legends, Space, with their hits on a translucent green vinyl for the first time, as this is their debut compilation featuring all the hits, and some bonus extras – all on a tangy translucent 140g LP for your enjoyment. And it comes with some pretty spectacularly intense cover artwork as well – this is, after all, Space: Avenging Angels or maybe their giant-headed Alien-like creatures come to destroy the world; it’s a potent image.

On the single green vinyl are a total of 14 tracks from their career, with the hits included, which takes us through the likes of Female of the Species, Me and You Versus the World, and Neighbourhood with that rather distinct vocal from Tommy Scott, doing his thing in full flow. On the B-Side, there’s a remix of the lovely Bad Days, plus Dark Clouds – which always felt radio friendly – plus Gravity and The Shit You Talk is Beautiful, all the songs edged with that uniqueness of the band unlike any other, always merging as much as that can.
