Every film lover has a favourite cinema, when I was a kid it was the old ABC/Cannon or Odeon in Plymouth – both long gone in their current form – but for the past 15 years or more it’s been Picturehouse Cinemas, across the country, from London to Exeter – they’re a subtle gem in amongst the mass of multiplex’s, with comfy seats, friendly staff, a great membership and wide range of films from all genres to choose from every week.
I saw the trailer for this new celebration this weekend before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (which is mad and a lot of fun by the way), as Picturehouse Cinemas are partnering with Searchlight Pictures to present This Is Searchlight: a 30th-anniversary celebration bringing some of the prestigious distribution company’s finest films back to the big screen, all across the UK, from 20 September to 28 November!

The season sets out to prove that ‘your favourite movie is a Searchlight movie’, showcasing 11 of their best-loved titles, including the likes of Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland, not forgetting the indie-spirited comedies like The Full Monty, Sideways and Little Miss Sunshine, as well as rarely-screened cult favourites such as Danny Boyle’s Sunshine and Park Chan-wook’s Stoker.
Tickets are just £8, but Picturehouse Members will get an extra treat too: all the films in the season are part of Picturehouse’s Film Club selection, meaning Member tickets cost only £1 and, reportedly, their should be some special, limited-edition merchandise to celebrate all things Searchlight.
Kate Gardiner, Searchlight Pictures’ Director of EMEA Marketing had this to say,
“Clare Binns and the team at Picturehouse have been fantastic partners for Searchlight since the inception of the label in 1994, so this special programme, showcasing the breadth of our catalogue, feels like the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. From crowd-pleasing classics to rarely-screened gems, from stripping steel workers in Sheffield to eccentric hoteliers in Zubrowka, there’s something for everyone to watch – or rewatch – as part of This is Searchlight”.
