There was something equally nostalgic and fresh about that motion poster teaser for James Gunn’s Superman, see below, adding in that wonderful touch of John Williams’ Superman theme from Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie, it nudged Christopher Reeve memories and maybe even a bit of Man of Steel stylistics, Henry Cavill‘s finest hour in the role.

This new trailer goes high on emotive scoring, with just snippets of the big adventure to come, riffing on old and new – and suggestions of everything we’ve seen in recent years all rolled into one. And I’m very much here for it. I wonder if Gunn’s Superman, who writes and directs, will aim to bring back some of that original innocence and wonder that works with DC’s timeless character, and has often been lost in wealth of hyper slow-mo speed cuts and heavy CGI hellishness. Not to say these things clearly won’t live here as well, but James Gunn felt different from the minute his role was expanded under the DC umbrella.

Watch the trailer now and, good boy, Krypto!

David Corenswet stars as [spoiler] Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and *breathes* Neva Howell.

With cinematography from Henry Braham, and the score from John Murphy… looking forward!

Superman flies into UK and Irish cinemas on 11 July 2025
