If you’ve followed my coverage of the Majority Audio range, you’ll know that I’m dependably excited with their output, and how they’re evolving as a company both through their innovative creations at an affordable price, as well as the quality you get for your hard-earned cash.

While Majority offer a variety of audio-based tech, and I’ve reviewed their soundbars while watching film, to making use of Bluetooth speakers and even a DAB/CD Music System from the UK-based company, with each release, they’ve proven that quality can be economical and give you the rewards you may not expect. After a recent step into record players, the Majority Folio is a solid addition to their range, which might benefit from a few tweaks, but it remains a positive product depending on what you’re after, and that overall cost – of course.

First Impressions and Setup

Following up the Moto, the Moto Plus and, most recently, the Majority Stylo (read my full review on that one here), the Majority Folio also introduces the larger 12” aluminium platter to its turntable, and employs the Audio Technica AT3600L cartridge. The different between this and the Stylo is that the Folio is more of an all-in-one unit if you need it, as there’s a speaker option integrated into the base of the unit.

The turntable might be a relatively new venture for Majority, yet I’ve already seen abundant advances and so while the excellence of their other items is certainly here, and I can see the market they’re aiming for, I’m not a huge fan of embedded speakers into a player unless that’s your only option – as a buyer. If it is, then you’ve got a very nice setup but I’ll come back to sound choices shortly – and I mean that literally.

In terms of setup, the Majority Folio is so easy to work as the record platter/player is ready to go. It’s just a case of removing a few bits of cardboard and plastic – that’s keeping everything in place when it’s delivered – plus taking off some safety stickers and rubber bands, then you just have to plug it in [supplied] and get your records ready to play!

Design and Speakers

In terms of design and weight, it’s a solid little beast at 3.7kg and certainly feels strong, which is a constructive thing. The wooden top, along with the speakers built-it around the base, give it a subtly stylish book-like vibe and you can see it fitting into any modern space, of any size – which is another huge benefit. Also, don’t forget, because you can hear your music the minute you put down that needle on the record, there’s the extra bonus of it being portable to. Once you slide on the dust cover, it’s a sturdy setup and one that you would expect for the price, so another good benefit.

For my music tests, I used The National, Radiohead, Taylor Swift, Pulp, Bon Iver and even David Bowie and Queen across both 33 and 45RPM. I find that the best production is the smartest way, through all the treble, bass, and the rest, it’s good to turn up super loud and enjoy the full world of your record.

You’ve also got the bonus of pitch control which I needed to adjust on first use. It’s a remarkably simple button setup, which you can turn left or right to make sure that record sounds as it should. I’ll always say read the instructions if you’re complete new to the game and, if you are, I actually think this would be an excellent choice.

As an aforementioned ‘all-in-one,’ you can hear your vinyl immediately, or you can utilise the RCA Speaker output if you’ve got some to plug in. There’s also an option, as the rest of their range, to use Bluetooth to connect to any Bluetooth-related speakers you might use as well the Folio’s built-in speakers. I also connected to my Bluetooth speakers, which just happen to be Majority-branded, so I could get an all-round experience and then it all really came to life.

That Audio-Technica cartridge

Now ‘as standard’ with their turntables, the Majority Folio houses the AT 3600L Cartridge, which a great device to have at this level. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you’ll know how much I admire this Majority Audio-Technica team-up, because it’s absolutely key to the success of the sound coming out of the player.

The cartridges’ all-encompassing sound reproduction means the strength of those grooves will play your music via any speaker method you choose – making all of this about the welcoming resonance and experience. It has a lightweight aluminium tonearm, pitch control, and an adjustable counterbalance, therefore this is ready to play from the first go – but you can alter it if you need to, and that’s an important extra.

Summary

Overall, the Majority Folio is another confident turntable on their roster. Compared with the older Moto model, this ups the game with the 12” platter and the general strength of the item. While I prefer speakers externally, I can absolutely understand the usefulness of having everything you need in one package, and it certainly does the job if that’s your restriction.

As a record player with Bluetooth capabilities, it completely beats any plastic version for the sound quality into external speakers as that’s as clear as you would want – obviously depending on the quality of those speakers – mine being the Majority D100 no less, a new favourite in a compact space. In an overall sense, this is a great choice if you’re returning to the vinyl game, or if a newbie in this fun space.

The Folio rewards you by being simple, as these things can rightly be intimidating to a new user, with all the mentions of pitch control and adjustable counterweights, so consider this a friendly way to eventually move to something bigger one day but, for now, the Majority Folio is certainly more than enough to get that music passion back into your day-to-day.

And, as I almost always finish on these days, that central gain of the substantial Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge, which is as valuable as it is on their other players, allows you – the listener – to truly expand that musical experience and, significantly, excite you with every play of your preferred record.
