You know as well as I, if you want to explore the Gothic depths of a story, in all its dark and often gruesome romanticism, then Guillermo del Toro is one of the finest working at the top level. Equally commercial and unconventional, his style exudes intrigue and imagination, which surely makes for a fine blend of parts for his interpretation of Mary Shelley‘s classic Frankenstein.
For del Toro, this is his ‘bucket list’ film – as he discusses here with Vanity Fair, and the story of ‘a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation,’ is proven to be timeless, and with a screenplay from del Toro, plus a cast including Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, with Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz, well – it’s definitely on the list!
