One of the specific things I enjoy about the film world is how unexpected gems can come out of nowhere, and especially out of the indie scene. Today we’ve got the trailer for Australian comedy-drama ‘Pawno‘, it’s the directorial debut of Paul Ireland with a really interesting trailer I wanted to share with you all.

Described by Ascendant Releasing as a ‘big-hearted, character-driven ensemble‘ it takes place in a pawnbrokers who see all kinds of characters day-to-day in a suburb of Melbourne. Focusing around 12 individual stories, the film gradually develops into stories of romance and last gambles by people just trying to get through their lives and I think it looks like a must-watch.

Pawno is written by Damian Hill and stars John Brumpton, Kerry Armstrong and Tony Rickards, alongside upcoming talents Maeve Dermody, Mark Coles Smith, Naomi Rukavina and Hill himself, it was produced by the latter with Ireland under their own production company Toothless Pictures, so it’s a real indie collective.

Interestingly, the soundtrack features the legendary Tom Waits, who let Pawno use his music after they showed him the film and there’s also Vance Joy, hip-hop outfit Astronomy Class and Chris Saray.
