Directed by Kane Parsons, based on his own series, and written by Will Soodik, this crazy-looking new film from A24 – titled Backrooms – looks like an enhanced horror version of Severance (or even 1997’s sci-fi horror Cube) but, in fact, has developed and been inspired by a famdom of liminal spaces, basically meaning locations that are usually busy being, or even feeling, unusually empty.
While I know only a little of the internet movement, as a photographer I actually love strange, uncomfortable spaces that usually feel familar before taking them out of that context until they’re not necessarily quite what they seem – and loving the look in Backrooms, helped to life by cinematographer Jeremy Cox.

And Kane Parson’s film certainly taps into this aesthetic after setting us up with the only insight being “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom” and then the trailer takes us inside spaces which appear to amalgament into endless eerie and seemingly empty rooms…
Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, here’s the trailer:
