Absolutely love this. When art, originality, and accessibility merge!

Today, a ‘double exposure’ mural was unveiled in Manchester’s Corn Exchange to mark the release of Disney+ and Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again, this style used by artist Insane51 allows for three different perspectives of the image: through a red lens, a blue lens and through the naked eye.

Created in collaboration with the RNIB, the Royal National Institute of Blind People, this mural features a tactile version of the work, and NaviLens audio description that can be accessed by scanning a NaviLens code, so this artwork can be engaged with on multiple levels, making it more accessible to those with sight loss. Insane51, discussing his latest work, had this to say:

“As a huge fan of Daredevil, working on this mural was an incredible experience for me. I still remember seeing Daredevil on my screen for the first time when I was 10, and now, getting to bring my own artistic vision to this character feels surreal.

It’s amazing to see how my art style connects with the show’s themes, and I love that people will be able to engage with this piece not just visually, but also on a tactile and auditory level. Bringing this new interactive element into my work was something I hadn’t done before, and that made the whole process even more exciting.”

The mural represents the duality of Daredevil: Born Again, portraying Matt Murdock, or Daredevil, and Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, and their complex battle against each other and themselves. The fiery red is inspired by Matt Murdock’s struggle to move forward without the weight of his violent past, with the cold blue representing Fisk’s former life of corruption that he is trying to leave behind.

When speaking about the mural, Sonali Rai, Media, Culture and Immersive Technologies Senior Manager at RNIB, also added,

“A show about a blind superhero is the perfect catalyst for making public art more inclusive. This is an exciting opportunity to ensure that incredible artwork can be experienced by everyone, and we hope it sets a precedent for accessibility to become a standard in public art.”

The artwork is open to the public for a limited time, displayed in Manchester’s Corn Exchange, on Fennel Street, if you pop along, drop us a message
