Mary Poppins Returns hits top spot with second biggest Home Entertainment sales of the year so far

Jane (Emily Mortimer), John (Nathanael Saleh), Annabel (Pixie Davies), Ellen (Julie Walters). Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) Georgie (Joel Dawson) and Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt)

Heads up for the 25th Official Film Chart, the only weekly chart in the world to count both physical disc and digital download sales, because Mary Poppins Returns has debuted at Number 1 with magical sales that take the superb 2018 sequel to 280,000 sales on disc and digital formats. The only film to surpass this figure in a week is 2019’s biggest seller so far, Bohemian Rhapsody (Our review) which continues to cling onto 3rd place in this week’s chart.

We loved the escapism of Mary Poppins Returns after it hit cinemas on the build-up to Christmas, starring Emily Blunt as the titular character, the sequel sees beloved nanny Mary Poppins return to London during the Depression to visit now-grown Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw), who have suffered a personal loss. With the aid of her cheerful lamplighter friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Mary tries to help the family – now including Michael’s three children – to rediscover the joy and wonder that’s been missing. It’s a classic tale, told with a lot of love.

Interestingly as well, the original Mary Poppins enjoys a resurgence as it floats up to Number 21 on this week’s chart.  It has now sold over 2.1 million copies on disc and digital download in total. Which isn’t bad for a film made over 55 years ago(!).

Last week’s Number 1 Aquaman (Read Matt’s review) dives down one place to Number 2. Ralph Breaks the Internet drops two to 4, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (Dans’ review here) remains at 5. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (Matt’s review) hangs in the Top 10 at Number 6.

The excellent A Star Is Born (Our review) celebrates its tenth week in the Top 10, this week climbing one place to Number 7, while Venom takes over this week’s Number 8 position. Ahead of the cinematic release of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War returns to the Top 10 after climbing six places to Number 9. Finally, a second appearance from Disney’s magical nanny as the box-set of Mary Poppins/Mary Poppins Returns debuts at Number 10.

This week’s Official Film Chart online show contains a sneak peek at Bumblebee, our review is here, which is available to download & keep from April 29, check out the trailer below for the full countdown:
