Having enjoyed the output of Made by Mutant for some time now, it’s an absolute pleasure to delve into this duo of delightful soundtracks from two entertaining films from the year. Two original motion picture soundtracks with unique takes, one as a score and one more of the soundtrack, are perfect ideas either for yourself or a gift this time of year.

After previously enjoying (and reviewing) the likes of Michael Giacchino’s Exotic Themes for the Silver Screen, as well as great work from Alien Romulus, Dune: Part Two and Lisa Frankenstein – all on vinyl – there’s extra choices out there which includes the likes of Late Night with the Devil, Blue Velvet, Top Gun, del Toro’s Frankenstein, Twisters, and The Running Man, plus an upcoming Severance: Season Two package that looks sublime!

Sinners

First up is the outrageously superb, soulful soundtrack for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, one of the best films of 2025 without a doubt. Original, inventive and an intelligent amalgamation of themes, scenes and music, this vinyl from Mutant – in partnership with Sony Masterworks – is the best way to revisit the journey of the film from the comfort of your favourite listening spot.

This original soundtrack album to Coogler’s film is exec produced by the film’s composer Ludwig Göransson (who also serves as an executive producer on the movie), and features original songs by the likes of by James Blake, Cedric Burnside, Jerry Cantrell, Miles Caton, Eric Gales, Rhiannon Giddens, Ludwig Göransson, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Iarla Ó Lionáird, OG DAYV, Bobby Rush, Raphael Saadiq, Hailee Steinfeld, Don Toliver, Rod Wave and many more!

You want to ‘feel’ that heart of I Lied to You, by Miles Caton, which envelopes you, and recreates that scene in your mind, plus all the creepy fun (as well as sounding great) Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go? via the combination of Lola Kirke, Peter Dreams, Brian Dunphy, Darren Holden and Jack O’Connell.

The other fun thing is the ‘smoke and stack’ vinyl, which is a transparent, swirled red and black on 2 x 140gm records, plus a genuinely epic massive ‘booklet’ which is 12” x 12” and invites you in over 48 pages with small essays/liner notes from the director and composer plus Hanif Abdurraqib, Jake Blount, alongside a host of artists notes that involve a mix of information on the individuals, as well as some music-history for select tracks, it adds an extra layer of appreciation that definitely feels right at home.

While you can also pick up the score on vinyl, by itself right here, this soundtrack immerses you into the vibe of the film, it’s darkly funny, it’s raw and real, fuelled by the scenario we find our characters placed in – and you can feel the wealth of storytelling in the songs themselves.

Jurassic World Rebirth

Now, I’ve been a Jurassic Park fan since the beginning (and the book!), and while not every film has hit those heavy heights of the best one – there’s been some great adventures along the way and Jurassic World Rebirth brings back the fun (reviewed) equalled up with the very brutal reality of fearing the dinosaurs, as you should!

While we now know that director Gareth Edwards was told to cut back some homage, by none other than Steven Spielberg himself, and I think that’s a sensible move if you want to move a franchise forward, there are little elements of John Williams original score involved but it’s mostly a new adventure in film accompaniment and expansion by the hugely experienced and gifted Alexandre Desplat. Like Sinners, this is the physical media debut of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, thanks to Mutant in partnership with Back Lot Music.

For the score, Edwards returned to Desplat, who he worked with on 2014’s excellent Godzilla, and the composer is no stranger to iconic franchises after also adapting essences of Williams before, when he put his individual stamp on the vital compositions for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 and, as told to Mutant, Desplat was very aware of what he was stepping into with this piece of work, saying:

“John Williams wrote a fantastic melody for Jurassic Park that I now get to reinvent, rejigger and resculpt in ways benefit our movie. My desire was not to bluntly quote John’s score but subtly echo it or make use of it in the original score I have written for the film in playful and meaningful ways.”

He continued…

“I feel very fortunate to be doing the music for a movie franchise like this, which entertained me so greatly, as a filmgoer, for decades. I dreamed of writing music for movies like this since I was a teenager, and now, here I am,” he adds with a laugh, “part of Jurassic World, almost a teenager.”

And, for me, he’s created a fine addition to the world of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, deftly and hugely expanding his repertoire with the musical spirit of all those gone before – Williams, Giacchino – to enhance the entertaining set pieces from the film, with no expense spared from Alexandre Desplat.

Motifs, melodies and booming chase sequences all enriched by a fine musical talent and, another fine specific addition from these Mutant releases, they come in the form of 2 records in the now classic JW colours of a sharp green and murkier-stylish green-grey, whipped up around the physical vinyl in 140gsm, and it sounds excellent!
