Blade Runner 2099: Trailer, Release Date and First Impressions

Blade Runner 2099 hits Prime Video this November….

Rumoured-a-plenty for quite a while now, I wasn’t sure if Blade Runner 2099 would see the light of the hazed, futuristic day but Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television Group surprised us with a new trailer and further reveals at SDCC 2026 last week!

Hitting the streaming platform, Prime Video, as a limited series on 25 November 2026, the teaser certainly has a feeling of both Blade Runner (of which I’m a lifelong fan) and Blade Runner 2049 but it’s difficult to tell of the quality of the story in the middle, at this stage anyway, despite it looking violent enough to fit the right dirty dystopian criteria.

While I believe it’s been in post-production for a couple of years, the scale of the creation would make sense, but I can’t shake the sense of videogame and over-explanation even in this teaser, although it might be trying to appeal to a broader audience, and I’ll apply that concern because it seems a little too clean and shiny – compared to the stunning work on the likes of Andor, and Stranger Things, at their absolute peak.

Anyway, it does star Michelle Yeoh in a key role, plus Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold, and Lewis Gribben together with Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi as recurring guest stars – all from showrunner Silka Luisa.

I completely disagree with the three comments above. The teaser’s atmosphere is great, the hints to Schafer as a new type of NEXUS with a new level of consciousness and self-determination, and the new Blade Runner played by the great Michelle Yeoh are promising, while the world-building consequentially moves forward the first and the second movies including fog, rain and omnipresent commercials. It’s only a teaser but as a fan for 30 years to me this looks very, very promising. Plus, I would think the presence of master Scott himself as executive producer who will have done everything to protect his vision of the great Philip K Dick short-story is a guarantee that this series will not be going in the wrong direction.

  Fair enough indeed, let’s hope then! Although, you could easily argue that Scott’s output of late has been very up and down, however, I’d always want a better outcome, that much is true.
