It’s interesting when someone as ‘big’ as Amazon will drop their original film, due to their ties with OpenAI, in the hope that some kind of association won’t come back their way but – the thing is – everyone knows about big tech and their conglomerates, so it’s a curious choice which actually lends itself to highlighting the film, possibly more than they originally hoped.

If you’re unsure what the heck I’m talking about, this is the trailer for Luca Guadagnino‘s new film, Artificial, starring Andrew Garfield. Written by Simon Rich, it tells the biographical story of Sam Altman, the CEO of artificial intelligence company OpenAI and focuses in on the strange firing and rehiring cycle of Altman, where the board gained control of the company and removed him, and yet Altman still returned.

I figure Andrew Garfield can’t resist this type of real-life character, after playing Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, here he takes on his portrayal of Altman and all of that world within. The film also stars Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Rylance, and Billie Lourd – and looks set to open in cinemas over the Christmas season, with a specific UK date to follow.

Oh it’s been picked up and released by Neon, after those original release intentions, and this could be one that’s worth looking out for in this current era of the oddities of AI, and the people who champion the possible greater evils of it… Garfield recently told Esquire:

“I don’t know this person, to be clear,” he continues. “I don’t know Sam Altman. I’ve never met him. I was going off of the script and court transcripts and interviews and research, and we were telling a story, but I think anyone who takes on that level of responsibility for a company or a technology that you know is going to do a hell of a lot of damage to the soul of humanity [must have] a certain ability to dissociate.”
