If you haven’t delved and indulged in The Pitt yet, just check out one episode and you’ll be hooked, it’s stellar television. While in the UK, I didn’t see ER as early as I saw the BBC’s Casualty, those differences were huge once it hit UK television. While ER completely changed the game, The Pitt is re-inventing what a medical show can be at its most intense and informative.

As a setup, the show offers a realistic look inside the challenges facing healthcare workers in America, seen through the lens of the frontline staff getting through a 15-hour day in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh. Given that I work within our NHS, and I try to stay morally aware, the similarities for UK-based workers are easy to connect and, in many ways, highlight and remind us how lucky we are to have this free, often life-saving public service.

Each episode plays out in real-time, with multiple character threads and medical emergencies interjecting smart, relevant storylines that don’t preach, they simply show it how it can be. Exec produced and starring Noah Wyle in the lead as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the HBO-backed series also stars Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, Ayesha Harris,  Sepideh Moafi, and Shawn Hatosy to name just a selection, and this is a masterful ensemble.
