“Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”
At the start of the year I was very intrigued to see what upcoming Netflix series 13 Reasons Why could do because, for some reason, the teasers were great and it felt like something special was coming with Jay Asher‘s best-selling book finding a life outside the pages, thanks to show creator Brian Yorkey.
For me, what followed was one of the strongest insights into the lives of teenagers that I’ve witnessed in this era and I’m years beyond those days. In fact, it took me to memories – both positive and sad – of that time and consequentially helped me recall moments that reflected those on-screen. With an incredibly strong cast of great young actors including Dylan Minnette, Christian Navarro, and Alisha Boe, the story is told in both the ‘now’ and flashback, as they bring to life the desperately sad tale of Hannah Baker (the excellent Katherine Langford), a girl who commits suicide and leaves cassette tapes behind that give 13 Reasons why she did it, who (if anyone) was to blame and why it was her only way out of a life she could no longer deal with.
While there were uneducated rumours of the show ‘glamorising’ suicide, anyone who watched knows this is far removed from the truth and the specific scenes when we witness Hannah killing herself, moments they rightfully decided to keep, are also harrowing depictions of something so very horrific, and real, they’ll never leave my mind. I think those kind of things almost need to be seen to remind its audience of the truth in front of them, and this was a vital ingredient to its success.
Saying all this, the entire series is quite conclusive and like many, I didn’t really see the need to take their stories further. On the flip-side of this, Jay Asher wanted a second season but never wrote the book, so is more than eager to see what can happen next. So with executive producer Selena Gomez confirming its return via Instagram yesterday, it’s now clear that everyone (who can) is coming back and they also offered up this teaser:
