Blade Runner: The Final Cut – 4K UHD and Blu-ray Review

With Blade Runner 2049 just two weeks away, this re-release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut comes out at a perfect time for any film lover, or newcomer, to embrace and enjoy Ridley Scott’s 35-year-old masterpiece in all its restored glory.

My introduction to the film was back in my A-Levels and an awesome teacher who got us all into the cult classic and classics titles that were beyond our scope at the moment, this was the days when you couldn’t just pick up it anywhere or stream online. Blade Runner captured my imagination and not just because of my love for science-fiction, but also because it looks glorious and embodies the vision of Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ with a sterling screenplay from Hampton Fancher and David Peoples.

Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard lives on as an iconic performance in the history of modern cinema and the sheer, still convincing, futuristic aesthetic of Jordan Cronenweth’s cinematography juxtaposing with Vangelis’ soaring score continues to offer up something so very unique. While CGI can often kill a ‘vision’, in Blade Runner nearly every aspect of visual representation is done intelligently and with an astute meaning. With every restoration moment, the last properly taking place in 2007, it still looks wondrous.

This 4K UHD release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut offers up the restored and remastered original movie, extended and added scenes, and improved special effects alongside director, screenwriter and technical crew commentary. You’ve also got an absolutely huge amount of featurettes which frankly explore every avenue of the film, it’s impact, and all levels of directors cut to the original theatrical cut – You may have seen a few of these around already but I feel like everything is now here with this release and it’s as beautiful as tears in the rain, except they’re not lost, and it’s time to enjoy it all over again.
