Today the mighty Secret Cinema have announced that this summer, from 8th – 25th August, their next production will bring to life Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the classic Shakespearean love tragedy Romeo and Juliet in a secret outdoor location.

Secret Cinema have been running for just over 10 years now and this latest immersive film experience sounds not only spectacular but also an absolutely perfect choice for their style. Not only will it re-introduce Luhrmann’s magnificent film but there’s so much scope and we feel it will be something very special once again. They’ll transform a secret outdoor London location into the spectacular multi-layered world of Verona Beach.

Secret Cinema Presents William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet will offer up live bands, DJs, choirs and artists, and the open-air productions will be the largest experiences they’ve ever produced, with an audience of almost 5,000 people who’ll take part in the show.

Secret Cinema Presents William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet will be set against the themes of peace, redemption and salvation, young hearts of Verona will be summoned to the city on behalf of the brave and noble Captain Prince. All are called to create a truce between the warring houses of Montague and Capulet, all must come to crush a cup of wine in peace.

Audiences will be transported to a world that depicts the iconic and stylised elements of the film and Shakespeare’s story. This playground of performance is separated into a myriad of sprawling sections that will bring light and life to the characters, words and desires of Baz Luhrmann’s world like never before.

“We are excited to take Secret Cinema into the fields re-imagining the festival format by creating large scale magical immersive worlds across an entire outdoor location, where the audience live inside the most loved films of all time. We are excited to launch our summer festival with the perfect film in Romeo and Juliet. The film is the perfect title to bring to life and confronts some profoundly important social issues, such as youth violence, that remain as relevant in London today as they did in Shakespeare’s Fair Verona. We will be working with a London based charity who work towards tackling these problems.”
