Recent years have seen some great independent festivals spring up across the country and for the Black Deer Festival, taking place at Eridge Park in Kent from June 22-24 this summer, that word is very apt as it’s the UK’s newest Americana and Country Music Festival that features a super impressive line-up.
Black Deer Festival is an intriguing animal all of its own, they promise to pull you in with the sounds of Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Roots and the Blues. With the music of the latter evoking the soul found in the churches and fields of the once segregated American South. In a real sense, they’re a diverse bunch of passionate roots-inspired artists, showing us what Country and Americana truly is, where it came from, and where it’s heading.
The likes of Iron & Wine, Passenger, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Ward Thomas, Eric Bibb, The Wandering Hearts, Stu Larsen, Striking Matches, Kiefer Sutherland (..Yes!), The Webb Sisters, The Sheepdogs, Wildwood Kin and SO many more listed here over 3 days really sets the tone, and a beautiful, unique tone that will be.
There’s all this, in a stunning setting, and we haven’t even mentioned the food and drink yet! Not only is there everything you’d expect with an Americana festival, that being ribs, pulled meats, brisket, rotisserie chicken, smoky scents and sweet sauces. They’re all ethically sourced and resolutely British… click here for one hell of a tease on their Instagram.
There’s also cooking ‘slow and low’ in custom made smokers and, for the Veggies, they’ve got coal-roasted aubergine, cheese stuffed Jalapeno’s, and charred corn tacos and more to prove that smokehouse cooking needn’t be all about the meat.
It wouldn’t be any festival without drinks, of course, and the Black Deer Festival have craft beers, artisan ales, fine wines, and barrel-aged smooth tasting spirits so, yeah, just get me there now… all right?! There’s also coffee, smoothies and a fine balance throughout.

If you’re new to the game, Americana is a world that at times can be gritty and raw, with a rusty edge. Yet also effortlessly cool due to the passionate sub-cultures that exist. Most important of all, is that it’s a world in which anything less than authentic isn’t tolerated.
If you’re a fan of bluegrass, folk, blues, and country. If you find vintage letterpress posters beautiful. If you yearn for the great-outdoors, and crave the smoky tastes of ‘slow and low’ barbecue cooking. And if you’re after authentic good-times, with a family friendly vibe – then Black Deer, is very much a festival for you.
