This does sound like it could be a lot of fun, so we’re intrigued to announce that RTVE and Amazon Prime Video have started pre-production of a four-episode drama series about the historic voyage of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Ferdinand Magellan around the world in the 16th century, entitled Boundless.
Elcano and Magellan set sail from Spain on an extraordinary adventure in a bid to prove that the Earth was not flat but spherical. 500 years since this incredible voyage, Boundless will revisit this spectacular feat of human endeavour for a TV series like no other, which will launch exclusively in 2021 on Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States and Latin America.
Across those four 60-minute episodes, Boundless will depict the pair’s thrilling expedition as they head into the unknown on an action-packed adventure. The high-budget, cinematic production is set to begin filming in summer 2020 in locations across the world including the Dominican Republic, the Canaries and the Basque Country, with filming of maritime scenes taking place at the UK’s renowned Pinewood Studios. To recreate the iconic voyage, the Victoria and Trinidad ships will be reconstructed and a replica of the Nao Victoria will be used; the first boat to sail around the world and the only one of the five expedition boats that came back to port.
“We are excited to participate in a project of this scale in which one of history’s most incredible journeys will be brought to many people around the world through Amazon Prime Video,” said Ricardo Cabornero, Head of Prime Video Content, Spain. “The series, directed by renowned director Simon West, will count with all technical resources to be a production full of action and epic.”
Mono Films and Kilima Media will be the series producers, assisted by a first-class technical team, helmed by British director Simon West, who brings with him unrivalled experience in action and adventure films (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and producer Miguel Menéndez de Zubillaga (The Expendables 2).
