Steve Martin and John Candy star in the iconic Planes, Trains and Automobiles – and it’s coming to 4K UHD for the first time!

No doubt one of my all-time favourites, with the legendary Steve Martin perfectly paired with the super-timeless talent of John Candy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of John Hughes iconic movies and it’s coming to 4K Ultra HD and a special Zavvi Exclusive Steelbook for the first-time on 21 November from Paramount Home Entertainment!

Somehow originally released on 25 November 1987, which wasn’t that long ago right (?!), Planes, Trains and Automobiles celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. With those comedy greats leading the journey, against Neal’s wishes it might be added, the uproarious film is easily a beloved holiday classic, and complete with so many laughs and a twist that still hits me in the heartstrings.

If somehow you don’t know, Martin plays Neal Page, an uptight ad exec trying to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving with his family but things not only keep delaying him, but he also keeps bumping into the same guy: Candy’s Del Griffith. In an effort to try anything to get home, Neal reluctantly partners up with Del, a slightly obnoxious yet loveable salesman, and together they embark on a cross-country adventure filled with outrageously funny situations and a generous helping of warmth.

This version from Paramount Home Entertainment is a newly remastered 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ and HDR-10, they’re promising us that it looks better than ever and comes packaged with a bonus “LOST LUGGAGE” Blu-ray Disc containing over an hour of never-before-seen deleted and extended scenes that were recently discovered in the archives of writer, producer and director John Hughes – and by the way, if you love his music, take a look at this Life Moves Pretty Fast compilation!

The newly uncovered footage offers a unique glimpse into the filmmaking and editing process and features even more hilarious moments between Steve Martin and John Candy. In addition to the newly discovered footage, the bonus Blu-ray Disc also includes Dylan Baker’s original audition for the character of Owen.  The 4K UHD Disc includes the feature film and some legacy bonus content:

  • Getting There is Half the Fun: The Story of Planes, Trains and Automobiles
  • John Hughes: Life Moves Pretty Fast (2-Part Documentary):
    • John Hughes: The Voice of a Generation
    • Heartbreak and Triumph: The Legacy of John Hughes
  • John Hughes for Adults
  • A Tribute to John Candy
