You’d be hard pressed to not find a wealth of Christopher Nolan fans always awaiting his next project, especially as the last 26 years has seen his filmography grow and creatively intensify ever since his feature debut, Following, in 1998. His notable talents particularly rose to fame with 2000’s Memento, followed by his take on Insomnia (2002) and then Batman Begins in 2005; the latter led the way for an unexpected rejuvenation of the superhero genre, in a way that completely reshaped how we’d approach those stories for the decades that followed, and in a way that trusted the audience.

Nolan kept that confidence in the tales he’d tell with the likes of Inception, Interstellar, The Prestige and Tenet – inviting the viewer to immerse and suspend disbelief, all for the purpose of taking part in an epic action adventure, while also feeling the human elements. Since then, it’s become clear that while honing those huge ideas, Nolan has had one story he’s visualised for the last 20 years, and this spark now arrives in cinemas, and in IMAX, this summer as his adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey is brought to life.
From what we’ve seen so far, as well as the most recent trailer (just below), it’s clear that we’re in for another encapsulating, mythic action epic, as well as that all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, who’ll take us through the saga, and (once again) it’s been filmed using IMAX film cameras – and you’ll know we’re massive (pun intended) of the IMAX experience, read our dedicated reviews here!

So, to get us in the mood – as I’m sure you’ve already seen a lot of production photos, you’ve already scrolled through a selection of shots taking behind-the-scenes during the filming, getting an extreme taste of both the setups and scale of what we can hope to expect this summer – Also, if you’re intrigued about the psychological journeys of Nolan’s lead characters in his films, click here for my feature, written just before the release of Dunkirk.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in cinemas on 17 July
